Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program
The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is a multidisciplinary outpatient program for people with chronic lung disease.
The program runs for eight weeks and is conducted twice weekly. Each session is two hours in duration and consists of a supervised exercise session and a structured education session. The exercise component is individually tailored and progressed.
The exercise session incorporates:
- an aerobic cardio-vascular fitness program
- a specific muscle strengthening program
- a functional retraining program designed to improve individual performance in personal and domestic activities of daily living.
The education session provides information, training and support to patients and their carers. It covers topics such as:
- knowledge of respiratory disorders
- breathing techniques and managing breathlessness
- use of medication in chronic obstructive lung disease
- energy conservation techniques
Objectives of the program are:
- Increase exercise tolerance and reduce breathlessness
- Increase muscular strength and endurance
- Improve health related quality of life
- Increase independence in daily functioning
- Increase knowledge of lung condition and promote self management
- Promote long term commitment to exercise
