Back Pain Rehabilitation Program
The comprehensive outpatient Back Pain Rehabilitation Program at Donvale Rehabilitation Hospital is based on current best practice management of this condition from around the world. It is a four week outpatient program consisting of six hours per day, three days per week, and it provides a team-based and functional approach to self-management of chronic back pain.
The Back Pain Rehabilitation Program includes:
- Gym Program
- Hydrotherapy
- Graduated work tolerance
- Relaxation
- Cognitive/behavioural approach to pain management
- Education
- Mechanisms of chronic pain
- Self-management of chronic pain
- Back care principles
- Implementation of manual handling techniques
- Use of medication
- Dietary advice
Objectives of the program are:
- Develop an independent lifestyle with effective management of pain.
- Develop pain management strategies including commitment to an independent exercise program and modification of chronic pain behaviour.
- Return to previous leisure pursuits or develop more appropriate activities
- Assist in return to previous or alternative vocational activities (where appropriate)
Participants are referred to the Back Pain Rehabilitation Program by their local doctor, physician or surgeon.
